Sugar carpet 3
Installation
Fonderie Darling, 2008
The ephemeral installation Tapis de sucre covers the floor of the exhibition space with refined sugar. In occupying the space to a minimum of its height, the installation reveals the void which contains it and refers to another void which is at work in the raw material refining process.
The adjective “refined” equally defines the matter transformed by the industrial purification process which produces the sugar’s whiteness, and the objects and attitudes selected within a cultural hierarchisation process. Through a use of the trompe-l’oeil, this installation refers back to our ambiguous adherence to a domestic comfort which systematically evacuates the realities of production.
